TEN-year-old Alan Armstrong has made a splash for Penrith Swimming Club by becoming the first member for many years to win a county age group competition.

The youngster, from Rimington Way, Penrith, won the individual medley (4x25m) at Workington when, despite being behind at the final turn, he showed great tenacity and self-belief to overhaul his rival and win by a fingertip.

Such success should act as a great spur to club members and the dedicated band of volunteers and coaches.

Alan, who is a pupil at Penrith’s Beaconside Junior School, also came second in the individual butterfly, front crawl and backstroke events.

Danny Smith, who has recently moved to Penrith with his family and attends the town’s Ullswater Community College, has been selected to represent the county at the regional championships as a result of his efforts in the competition.
